Castello di Mesola
The Castle of Mesola is one of the most representative residences of the Este architectural heritage. The structure is imposing and austere. Over the centuries, it has assumed the dual function of hunting lodge and sumptuous court, so much so that it is counted among the Este Delights. La Delizia was protected by nine miles of walls and surrounded by a lush hunting forest. The construction was started in 1578 at the behest of Duke Alfonso II, the last descendant of the dynasty. The drafting of the project was entrusted to Marc'Antonio Pasi, known as Il Montagnana. The frescoed rooms of the Castle of Mesola tell the story of the Este through scenes of daily life and historical enterprises. The second floor is reserved for the Deer Museum where you can perceive the close link of the Delizia with the surrounding area. In particular, it tells the alternation of the seasons within the forest and the relationship of the latter with the local flora and fauna.
